Myrmidon
A myrmidon is actually nothing quite as romantic as a mermaid. It's actually an ancient Greek word describing a hired ruffian. I enjoyed the interesting variety of meanings on the blog for this word. Keep up the great work. Floribunda's meaning drew the most votes on the poll. Well done, Floribunda.

A Myrmidon was a little known species from the Jurassic period. It was a small creature, about the size of a cat, and it lived on the edge of watering holes. Needless to say, the Myrmidon spent most of its time trying to avoid being stepped on by the likes of T-Rex as they came for a drink at the watering hole. Many of the Myrmidon's were unfortunately unsuccessful in avoiding being squished, and these days when archaeologists dig up fossils of large dinosuars, the remains of the Myrmidon can often be found between the toes of the large dinosaur.
