Have fun with a new word each day. I'll choose a word. You make up a meaning.

Kilderkin
A kilderkin is a cask for liquids measuring 16 or 18 gallons. Not sure why the discrepancy there but that's what my dictionary says. So Clare was on the right track with her interesting measurements. She was also the pick on the poll. Congrats, Clare.
It's a dry measure. It is equivalent to eighty scruples and twelve grains, or a pipkin and a three fifths, or seven twelfths of a scant peck, or two standard british handfuls. The metric equivalent is 0.435L.
Useage: 'I took Granny round a kilderkin of oats to make sure she could breakfast for the next few days.'
A Kilderkin is a distant relative of the Gherkin. It's nowhere near as tasty, as McDonald's found out when they tried to substitute Kilderkins in their burgers instead of Gherkins due to cost cutting measures. Anyway, Kilderkins are short and stubby (even shorter and stubbier than Gherkins), are black in colour and give off a rather nasty odour when cut sliced. Not a very popular vegetable at all.
A kilderkin was an older relative charged of accompanying a youth through the ancient druidic rite of passage. As the young man or woman chewed on a kilder root, a now extinct hallucinogenic plant which could be found throughout northern Europe until the Inquisition managed to eradicate it, he entered a trance. The kilderkin assisted the unconscious adult-to-be to make sure that his or her spirit did not lose the way back.
1. I choose an obscure dictionary word.
2. You invent a wacky meaning and add it as a comment.
3. After a certain time I list the true meaning and choose a winner for the invented meaning.
There are no prizes, just lots of fun!
Remember, children use this site too.
I am a children's author who has had a handful of books published by trade publishers. They're in book shops and libraries. I've also had a sackful of books published by educational publishers. These are mainly found in schools. I love words and that's why I invented this blog site.

When you think about it, we are all kilderkins (if we trace it back to Adam and Eve).
