Umbles

Umbles is deer offal which is edible and - yes - if you are a long serving word imp...we have had that word before. However, it was more than two years ago so I've forgiven myself for that glitch on this one occasion. I'll try to be more diligent in future. Your meanings were outstanding and I'm happy to report a tie on today's poll between two clever cookies - Scriptor Senex and silver_flight. Well done to both of you. I couldn't choose between you either so it's a well deserved tie.

An Umble is an ancient predecessor of a Womble. Umbles and Wombles are very English, so if you don't live in a Commonwealth nation, you may not have heard of either. Wombles are found on Wimbledon Common; many centuries ago, Umbles were prolific on Umbledon Field, which is now a carpark in London.

Umbling is a an extinct form of physical activity. Whereas tumbling involves leaping around doing cartwheels and backflips, umbling merely required participants to walk around randomly. It wasn't very exciting to watch. Participants were called umbles or umblers.

Umbles are a kind of chunky cookie made with muesli, chocolate chips and walnuts. Mmmm yummy, I must go and bake some.

Ha! now I know this one because I recently went on an umble. Umbles are disorganised rambles. They are led by people who haven't tried out the route before leading 20 other people around it. The name comes from them stopping at regular intervals and alternately looking at their map, their compass and the surrounding countryside and saying "Um, it looks like it's this way". I think sometimes an 'umble' is more interesting than a traditional ramble as it's quite fun to watch the irritation building in the other umblers who would of course, um, done a much better job of leading!

Umbles are traffic control road humps also known in the UK as Sleeping Policemaen. In the UK they are also colloquially known as 'Speed Bumps' which is silly because they slow you down!

These are the remains of once-undamaged umbrellas after coming off worst against the wind. It is rumoured that umbles have their very own patch on landfill sites.

Umble is that feeling you get when someone gives you a compliment you don't really deserve. Like when you deny a desert and the person who offered it to you says how disciplined you are--they don't know that you just came away from the corner bakery and ate two whoopie pies--and you say with the sincerest umbility, "why, thank you! I try to be."

"Umbles" is the cockney slang version of the expression "humble pie." If you've been taken down a notch or two, y'er mates may tease you about "havin' to eat umbles... again."

Umbles are the people who sit below the salts, because they are Ever So 'Umble.

Auntibeck: what's a whoopie pie?

A "clever cookie" . I'm not sure I've ever been called that before. What a lovely expression
