Colophony

Colophony is actually quite different to the wildly imaginative ideas suggested by the equally wildly named word imps today. Colophony is a dark resin distilled from turpentine and water. My dictionary fails to explain what that dark resin is used for - and I'm happy to leave it at that. Thanks to all those who participated today and well done on the poll to Holly Dolly.

Colophony is a polite word for breaking wind - primarily used in Victorian drawing rooms.

Damn! Scriptor got that one in first :-)

The Colophony were a small African tribe, thought to have been in existence around 1000 years ago. Unfortunately, they were incredibly noisy people and made such a din that lions had little trouble in locating them as a source of food, and eventually rendering them extinct

Colophony is, simply, a group of proctologists.

A colophony is a musical instrument consisting of a series of upright metal tubes, or columns, of varying widths and heights, which are struck by small hammers to produce tones.

Colophony is actually a medical procedure where sound waves are sent through the colon to determine the patient's level of constipation. It is quite uncomfortable and noisy which is why it is usually avoided. It is too hard for the doctor to keep a straight face while the patient is moaning in agony at one end and whistling a mystery tune from the other.

Colophony bananas are a rare type of banana native to Southern Chile. It is said to have the magical ability to cause its victims to turn neon purple with orange polka dots. It is also said to taste extremely good, which makes up for the color change.

Colophony is a particularly devastating Viking weapon not often described in historical literature. In its most simple form, it is a shortened halberd with a spiked ball on a chain. It was mainly used on ship to ship battles where combatants were in close proximity to each other.

Colophony is the term for those rude sounds that people make when they disagree or disapprove of what is being said. This includes snorting, coughing and sneezing with an outburst like "loser" or "liar" expelled simultaneously and loosely disguised by the noise. I think Chris Farley started it but you can usually see somebody doing this in almost every funny movie made in the last decade.
