Orohippus

Orohippus is a fossil quadruped believed to be the ancestor of today's horse. Your invented meanings were imaginative and complex. Thanks for putting on the thinking caps for this one. And thanks to Lydia for a meaning which took her to the top of the poll today. Great work.

An orohippus is a recently invented replacement part for elderly folk having difficulty walking. It is made of a new material which is extremely pliable and as expensive as gold.

Interestingly enough, I woke up with this condition this very morning. Orohippus is the condition of waking up with sore or numb hip bones from sleeping on them. This usually occurs in people who have interrupted sleep patterns and are too plump to sleep on their stomach.

Orohippus was a little known god of ancient Egyptian mythology. He was reputedly very ugly having an enormous mouth similar to that of the behemoth; a hippopotamus like creature that resided in the papyrus swamps. When provoked to anger Orohippus would open his huge mouth and swallow everything in his path. None of his offspring survived.

A orohippus is a hippo that has been orphaned by its parents. One Orohippus in a zoo was raised by monkeys. Because it thinks that it is a monkey it hangs (or tries to hang) in trees, and loves bananas.

The well to do gents in Edwardian times used to take their orohippuses with them when hunting. A solid gold flask usually charged with whiskey. When they returned to the local hostelry they would celebrate their success by simultaneously cheering, "Orohipp, orohipp hoorayus!
