A quartan is a name of a particular square dance, involving 4 couples. It was originally choreographed for the musical Oklahoma. Following the success of Oklahoma, the quartan became very popular, and is still performed to this day at State Fairs, Barn dances, and anywhere that square dancing is popular.
Quartan is a kind of cloth woven in square shaped patterns, Each individual square is divided into four smaller squares which are then in turn divided into fours. Each square has to be a different shade of the same colour, so it gets quite complex. The production of quartan is banned in Scotland as it is feared that it could lea to a corruption of traditional tartan patterns.
It's the elementary particle whose primary function is to ensure that no computer is 100% user-friendly. Were this ever to happen, the universe would descend into chaos and reality as we know it would simply cease to exist.

Quartan is a child sized foldout bed originating in Scotland. The frame is similar to a futon, but small enough for a child up to 3 foot tall and the padding comes in family tartan plaids.
A quartan is a woman who is excellent at scrabble, and takes every opportunity to force her significant other to play it with her. 'My, that was a very quartan move dear' (he says grumbling into his beard about the number of vowels he has)
Originally, a Quartan was a member of Quarta, an ancient Greek city-state. According to legend, the city built a magical ring around it, which through some miscalculation caused the entire city to disappear, never to be seen again. With the passage of time, the story of Quarta became almost a fable, and Quartan became a term to describe any great enterprise that was tragically doomed.

A quartan is an old Imperial measure used for milk. It is equivalent to 2 and a third pints or 1.3253333333333333333333333 litres. The name is thought to originate from the days when the average cow gave a "quart an' a bit" a day.
