Vellicate

To vellicate really means to twitch. I don't think any of your meanings came close to the truth but, fortunately, that's not the point of the game. Thanks for coming up with wonderful, quirky meanings yet again. The voters chose the rather scary meaning of Madame C who described a vellicate as someone who eats jelly babies head first.

A vellicate is a person that eats jelly babies by biting their heads of first.

Vellicate is actually a very old word for delicate or sensitive or irreplaceable. The spelling was changed to "delicate" around the 1800s, because it was easier to pronounce. No one really uses "vellicate" anymore. The word has been phased out of everyday conversation. The only people who still use it are those who want to show off their verbosity and those who don't want to accept modern technology. Most of the time, it would be used to describe someone with delicate feelings or a special vase.

Vellicate is the opposite of abdicate -it is to install oneself as master of all one surveys, wrapped in robes of rich purple velvet, much like the paintings of Napoleon's coronation.

A vellicate is a person without lips, cursed to live life with his/her teeth bared.

'Robert opened a vellicate-friendly restaurant chain which serves special recipes of only solids to avoid the embarrassment of having soup and drinks dribbling out of a vellicate's mouth.'

To vellicate is to ponder, but normally used in household matters. e.g. Jude vellicated as to where all the toilet roll had gone. She knew she only started it yesterday, and now it was nearly all used up. Or, Jude vellicated how long it would take for the sock that had mysteriously disappeared in the washing machine to turn up again.

Vellicate is the opposite of delegate. Instead of delegating tasks to others, a boss might vellicate, or grab up all the jobs for himself. For instance, Winthorp is such a control freak, he vellicates everything, including mopping the washrooms, leaving his staff free to make up word definitions on Word Imperfect.

vellicate - (v.) The hopping, jumping, squeezing, straining and sucking in you do when trying to put your jeans on after Thanksgiving dinner.

ex: "Marcia vellicated after the holiday dinner, determined to prove to herself that she still fit into her size 10 jeans, even after two weeks of Christmas cookies, cakes and creamy desserts."

To vellicate is to cure a piece of paper to preserve whatever is on it. Spraying a pastel drawing, or covering a collage with modge-podge are acts of vellication; this term is probably derived from 'vellum', calfskin paper used for midieval manuscripts, since these parchments were able to be so well preserved.

Vellicate is the opposite of vacillate, so to vellicate is to be very, very sure about something.

Vellicate is actually the term used to describe the intricate type of icing work done on cakes such as Wedding cakes. In particular the very delicate flowers and squiggly, squirly bits that look so good the thought of eating them makes you break into a cold sweat. I mean, somebody spent hour after painstaking hour creating that masterpiece and then some creton comes along and just eats it without nary a thought for the poor soul who has made it their life's work to produce a piece of art so stunning it should be on display in The Louvre! Anyway, that's what Vellicate means.

Vellicate is a baked desert popular in Australia and made with Brewer's Yeast. It resembles brownies, but has a heavier, yeasty taste (not unlike Vegemite.)

Vellicate is the scientific name for lint that sticks to surfaces (hence its use on the trade name "velcro"). Not just limited to fluff on your clothes, it prsents itself in one of those great life mysteries - "Why is it that despite what I wear, there is always blue vellicate in my belly button?"

Oh, good luck choosing betwen these! I'm laughing my head off just reading through them!

A vellicate is a person shunned by society for havng bad hygiene. The smelly guy on the bus is a vellicate, whose arm is raised to hold the bar above your head, exposing your nose to arm pitt smells that threaten to cause unconsciousness. The vellicate is usually unaware of why no one invites them over or wants to sit by them at lunch.
