Odalisque

An odalisque is actually a female slave or a concubine in a harem. I loved the suggestions for an alternative meaning and the one I loved most was the favourite on the poll too. It was from Squishy Mama, who said it's the way you feel after a good odal. I need one about now.

Odalisque is a rock formation found underwater, an underwater obelisque if you will.

They all agreed that the high point of the dive had been seeing the barracudas at the odalisque.

Odalisque is the greatest compliment a person can give to an artist by admiring a picture for a long time, even over-bidding. It can also mean adoration or worthy of idolism.

Example 1: A customer at the Louvre stared odalisquely at Mona Lisa.

Example 2: The geeky teenage boy stared odalisque-like at the beautiful cheerleader sitting in the next row, though she was too far out of his league.

I think I know the meaning of odalisque! But before I remembered it I felt it reminded me of Obelix (Asterix and Obelix) and so of obelisk. So an obelisk shaped pendant of opals.

Odalisque is the word used to describe a Southern Belle who has nothing better to do other than to lie around languidly all day on her chaise sipping on a Mint Julep whilst watching her husband and his cohorts playing croquet on the lawn.

Odalisque describes somebody's strange behaviour.

Everybody realised she was stressed when she started exhibiting odalisque behaviour, such as skipping in the street and singing "Jerusalem" very loudly, despite protestations from her embarrassed family.

Odalisque is a particularly complicated ice-dance step that only very advanced skaters can perform.

The Russian champion stunned the crowds last night, with the first perfect odalisque seen in competition since the Salt Lake City Olympics.

(I love Squishy Mama's definition!)

Odalisque is a type of French body-piercing, involving stitching small beads into the skin. Popular with the aristocrats before the revolution, it was associated with decadence by the revolutionaries, and decreed by Robespierre to be prima face evidence of anti-revolutionary leanings. This found with odalisque piercings were guillotined.
