Sistrum

A sistrum is a jingling rattle used by ancient Egyptians. I enjoyed your invented meanings for sistrum and thought they were much better than the true meaning. Raelha's meaning gained favour with the most voters - again! Great work, Raelha.

Sistrum is a percussion instrument from the medieval period of southern Europe, played frenetically, with the left hand only.

Oops. Had I done a little internet research before commenting, I would have said that a Sistrum is actually a severe weather phenomenon that occurs in arid climates, often followed by brief but intense downpours.

A sistrum (n.) is an argument (tantrum) between sisters involving screeching, pinching, the odd slap and lots of sulking afterwards.

Not to be confused with a brothrum which involves shouting, punching, the odd bloody nose, and lots of sulking afterwards.

Raelha: you remind me of George W. Bush who once addressed an audience as 'brethren and sistren'.

A sistrum is a small, brownish yellow bird of the finch variety. It eats seeds and small insects and has a cry of 'sistrum ... sistrum ... sistrum ... ' Hence it's name.

Sistrum is the secret code shared by sisters everywhere. Sistrum allows sisters to be vicious to one another in any given situation, but does not allow anyone else to be anything but perfectly kind and generous to the sister.

Sistrum is a corruption of "sinistrum", and refers to the practice of reversing domestic fittings for left-handed people - for example, swapping the hot and cold taps round.

The first recorded person to have his bathroom made sistrum was Mutius Scaevola (the Roman who burned his own right hand off as proof of his bravery), who had the lever for his shower fitted on the left side.

A Sistrum is a piece of gymnastic equipment and has recently been placed alongside the parallel bars and hoops as a good test of the gymnasts skill. It involves jumping from one bar to another through three hoops of fire.

A sistrum is the rhythymic strum of Cajun musicians that play with their fingernails on a washboard. It makes a sis, sis, sis sound.
