Nugatory

Nugatory is basically a negative word. It can be used to describe events or things that are futile, inoperative or not valid. I hope that will be useful for any of our less optimistic word imps interested in the possibility of vocabulary stretching. I thoroughly enjoyed all the invented meanings and highly recommend those of the winning duo, Aviva and Coolskoolmom. Well done, you two. Great work.

Nugatory is a kind of pre-purgatory. It's like the waiting room at a medical centre or doctor's office that you find out is only a waiting room for the real waiting room.

Nugatory (adj) - very valuable, literally worth as much as a nugget of gold, but actually may be a lot less - e.g. oil is said to be of nugatory value, but is several tens of thousands of times cheaper than gold.

nugatory - a formal speech given in support for conservative politicians or conservative political agendas. The maker of such a speech is called the nugate. Following most nugatories, it is standard for conservative politicians to proclaim a brief celebration commonly called a hugatory.

Such speeches once common in public gatherings are now limited to congressional or parliamentary meetings. This is due to recent public celebrations called mugatories.
