Vomer

A vomer is a small thin bone between your nostrils. Bet you didn't know it even had a name! Well, I didn't, anyway. Hopefully I'll be able to remember it one day when I need to be a scintillating conversationalist. There was another tie on the voting poll today. This time it's Belle Etoile and The Mad Fishicist who take the honours.

The masculine equivalent of "Old Maid".

"Oh, Teddy? No, he's never been married - quite the vomer, actually."

Vomer describes the moment when you are in a middle of a story and you get interupted, your audience is distracted and a new conversation begins. By the time the new conversation has finished you have lost the moment to complete your story.

This happens when people are long-winded in telling stories or add lots of background detail, believing it to be relevant.

Sometimes people are genuinely interested and pick up the story for you....'so you were in line for the checkout with a purple haired man, and what happened?'

More often than not if you are often a victim of vomer you realise to give up gracefully and join in the new conversation.

Vomer (rhymes with roamer) is an out-of-body experience. This mostly happens to people who are on the operating table, hovering between life and death.

Mr. Smith recovered from his bypass surgery, but vaguely remembers vomering during the operation.

The vomer is the third person in a team relay.

"The first two sprinters built up a good lead for the team but just before the vomer reached the anchor, he dropped the baton."

A shameful and irrevocable error.

Note: Named for Bud "Vroomer" Vomer, whose infamous 1979 NASCAR defeat went down in sports history as the most embarrassing moment ever.

Apparently, in the lead and on the final lap, he dropped a bottle of Grape Crush on the floor and it rolled under the gas pedal. The crowd watched in shock as he coasted to a stop and all the other cars passed him. He placed last.

Vomer was shortly thereafter quoted as saying, "Must be something wrong with the accelerator."

Sure, Vroomer. We believe you.

A vomer is tornado, that strikes suddenly in unexpected places, devastating small parts of a town and leaving the other parts completely unscathed.

Vomer is a tool used in rock climbing. One can actually use a vomer or engage in the act of vomering. A rock climber uses a vomer to move horizontally across a steep overhang. This act is only done in dire circumstances, the type that may make you want to vomit as well.
"I think we better vomer over there."
