Have fun with a new word each day. I'll choose a word. You make up a meaning.

Theorbo
A theorbo is a musical instrument. It's a two necked lute used in the seventeenth century. Some fascinating meanings made it to the blog today. There was a tie at the top of the poll and the joint winners are Aviva and Sandra Dodd. Well done, you two!

Theorbo - a circular or oval arena used as a place of entertainment or sport for the masses
Theorbo is the name of a Viking God, a distant relation of Thor.
Theorbo was God of the Oars and had sacrifices made to him before every pillaging raid. This ensured that the oars would move swiftly through the water, take the Vikings safely on their way, and return home in due course accompanied by slaves, treasure and cattle.
A theorbo is someone´s invented boyfriend. These are often created by people who wish to make acquaintances think that they must be a very wonderful person indeed if they can hook such a great boyfriend.
Example: Tracy´s friends were green with envy when she told them how rich and good-looking Dan was. How had she managed to find him, they all wondered. Then they discovered he was just a theorbo, making Tracy feel very foolish indeed.
It is not well known that the late U.S. president Theodore Roosevelt was not only intensely interested in music, he even invented an instrument himself. The theorbo (for "Theodore Roosevelt oboe") is very similar to the oboe, but unfortunately played very rarely now. If there were more music composed for it, that would certainly change.
In classical Greece, it was an orator's term for someone who couldn't sit still and listen, or for a speaker who got so wound up he was being loud and emotional. Kind of like our "hyper-active" (or later ADHD), someone just too speedy for the requirements.
Although the word fell out of use, it eventually surfaced again as "turbo."
Theorbo - a specially made archery bow which, in the middle ages, was sometimes secretly exchanged for an umpopular bowman's own equipment. The theorbo made any arrow fly like a boomerang returning to pierce the eye of the bowman who had fired it. After 1066 this gave rise to the famous battle cry - "Be jeepers, lad, thou must always watch yer arra in flight or, as 'arold, ye may 'ave your own blinkin' eye oot!"
Theorbo means "god globe", and was first used by missionaries to describe a primitive glass globe used by an African tribe. They mistakenly thought must be a form of god, since the natives would spend hours crowded round it in contemplation, and would not let the missionaries near it.
In fact, it turned out that cockroaches were placed in the theorbo. As they got hungry they fought and ate one another, and this was the tribe's means of entertainment.
The theorbo was, therefore, the predecessor to reality TV.
Theorbo - A crystal ball used by the early Christians to predict the future. This practice fell into disrepute during the Middle Ages but the fascination with theorbi (pl) never really disappeared and these wonderful objects can still be found in fortune teller booths at country fairs and school fetes.
I have only just found this wonderful site and trust that posting two definitions is not considered "cheating"
Theorbo (n)- an insulting name for one who is excessively and usually hypocritically pious. Theorboes(pl) will talk at length of how devoted, charitable, and religious they are, when on further questioning of others it will be revealed that all the admirable things they boast of are total fiction.
1. I choose an obscure dictionary word.
2. You invent a wacky meaning and add it as a comment.
3. After a certain time I list the true meaning and choose a winner for the invented meaning.
There are no prizes, just lots of fun!
Remember, children use this site too.
I am a children's author who has had a handful of books published by trade publishers. They're in book shops and libraries. I've also had a sackful of books published by educational publishers. These are mainly found in schools. I love words and that's why I invented this blog site.

That is THE rainbow sent by God to Noah after the great flood.
And that's a fact.

Theorbo is an intrument that measures the intervals of sound released by the air that escapes from a tire.

A theorbo is someone who acts like Rambo up until he or she is challenged and then quickly becomes a lot more like Eeyore.
An anti-theorbo does the opposite, acting like a victim, but suddenly becoming Rambo-fierce when put to the test.
Therobo: A theory that that is so far-fetched; it would be impossible to prove.
Theorbo is the worship of orbs, the floating balls of light sometimes seen by people.
