Mixen

Surprisingly, a mixen is otherwise known as a dung hill. Of course, the invented meanings were far more enlightening and I especially liked the verse from Loonilidi which appeared not to be an entry but, instead, a composition in support of another invented meaning. Thanks for that Loonilidi. Very clever, indeed. The winner on the poll today was Father Ann. Great work and very funny.

Mixen is a colloquialism used by builders in the north of England. It refers to liquid mix of water, sand, cement and gravel, which sets very hard. Not uncommon to hear a builder repairing a chimberly shout out: "Mate, send us up another bucket of that mixen".

'Mixen' is an ecumenical expression describing a Parisioner of undecide denomination. 'Mixen bating' is a competion played between local priests, who during the week will employ a variety of methods to lure the target mixen into their own congregation. Prizes for the winning Priest vary from collection monies to cake-bake proceeds etc.

A mixen is a small pit that a 'midden' drains into. A midden collect slurry from the cowsheds after the morning milking ritual.

The slurry is hosed into the midden and then passes through a seive like apparatus into the mixen, where is 'rests' until good and putrid.

The contents of the mixen is then pumped into a slurry tanker and trailed behind a tractor to be scattered on fields as manure.

Minnette Walters once wrote a thriller called 'The Sleepers' in which an elderly lady was pushed into a mixen and was drowned in the slurry. I have had nightmares since, dreaming of slurry rushing into my lungs.

The Mixen were a cult who believed that the world was going to end in 1009 (MIX in Roman numerals). After spending 1008 in prayer and penitance, the group's soothsayer announced "no change", so they spent most of 1009 partying instead. The prediction came true, since they all died from their excesses before the end of that year.

Mixen means "failure to thrive" or "runt" originatng from the fabled reindeer owned by Santa Claus.

Mixen, one of Santa's nine reindeer, was a runt and failed to thrive. He was treated like an outcast and didn't mix with the rest of the reindeer. Hence, "Twas the Night Before Christmas" only mentioned eight reindeer. it's quite sad, really.

Mixen - derivation of minx, a pert saucy girl but refers to a very young saucy girl.

Coo, I've just looked it up and I'd never have guessed the real meaning - my pet subject too!

Mixen is the brand name of a particular type of blender. The name was intended to make people think of German products, and thus evoke thoughts of strength and sturdiness, but alas the product's origin lay in Asia rather than Europe.

Mixen - a mischievous little gremlin who has a sock fetish. He is the reason you have all those odd socks cluttering up your chest of drawers.

Mixen (n)- one who blends into the background quite easily. They are usually quite ordinary-looking and are quite useful for spying. When you think you have picked out a mixen, you're usually wrong. They were that unremarkable, lurky one your eyes just skipped over.

I comes from the phrase "make sense" (pronounced very quickly). The last "s" sound dropped out eventually as it became slang and adopted other meanings.
eg.: 1) Yeah, it mixens! (means: Cool, that's right)
2)You're so not mixen! (means: you're out of your mind, wrong, out, totally not cool!)
3) That's mixen! (means: that's rubbish!)

A mixen is a rhyme used by witches when making brews and potions. The most famous mixen is from Macbeth:

'...double, double toil and trouble, fire burn and cauldron bubble...'

Here is the real definition though...

Mixen: From Seminole language, Mixen is the god of the oranges. In homage to this god, one of the biggest groves in the Sarasota area is Mixen's. Believe it or not!
