Discobolus

A discobolus is a statue of an ancient metal quoit thrower. So says my dictionary. I'm assuming the "metal quoit" is the precursor of today's discus. I'm happy to be corrected on that though. Anyway, some interesting invented meanings came out of the woodwork and the winner on the poll was created by Judi - who is always reliably creative! Thanks again Judi - I think! - for painting a rather frightening picture for us all.

Discobolus is a particularly unpleasant fungal foot infection caused by wearing tight shoes and nylon socks/tights over a long period. Many club goers suffer from this affliction as sweat seems to accelerate the infection as does long periods of dancing.

It is treated by applying fresh live yoghurt to the affected parts and taking large doses of vitamen C and the homeopathic remedy
fungolin 6c.

Discobolus is the phenomenon of mucus draining from one's nose who is suffering from cold or allergies. It is quite baffling that so much mucus can come from such a tiny place. Discobolus is especially awe inspiring in small children. A parent can wipe and wipe a little nose only to find it dripping again seconds later.

Discobolus-(opposite of bodacious)
Plastic surgery lingo for women's breasts as gravity and loss of elasticity send them plummeting earthward with time and child bearing.
Eventually they come to resemble flat disc-like slabs of skin sliding down the ribcage that then may be tucked and folded into a bra for some semblance of former shapeliness. I want to make it perfectly clear that I know this only from observation of others....well...maybeeee....not totally.

Discobolus (n) An Ancient Greek coin. When the obolus was first introduced it was square, because it was easier to make sure that they had used fixed quantity of gold. However, people didn't like square coins, since they led to holes in pockets and purses, and they could no longer play some of their favourite coin games.

However, as always, mathematicians came to the rescue and worked out how to calculate the area of the circle, and the first oboli minted in this shape are referred to as discoboli.

Discobolus is the name of a sport invented by the Romans as a warm-up event to gladiator fights held at the Coliseum. A huge rock in the shape of a discus was catapulted towards a group of ten slaves. If all ten were flattened in one strike, this was considered a bolus and the crowd roared their approval. If, on the other hand, there were survivors they were granted their freedom. This game has grown less violent over time and is now known as ten pin bowling

When one is really having a good time on the disco dance floor one is tempted to stay too long on the floor, and to ignore the warnings of one's own body. Any effluvia discharged while dancing, like snot or spit or ahem, other, is your disobolus.

A discobolus is the term given to a quantity of food that enters the stomach of a flatfish (e.g. plaice or flounder). The bolus of food is laterally compressed into a discoidal form, hence the name.

This word was first invented by a frightened and overimaginative toddler one evening at bedtime in Cheltenham 1958

'Mummy! Help! There's a discbolus hiding under my bed. Can I stay up pleeze?'

Discobolus (n)- a song that is considered so horrible by someone they usually get up and change it 5 seconds after it comes on, or, if that isn't possible, sit with their fingers in their ears humming loudly until it's over.
