Pettifogger

A pettifogger is a rascally attorney with inferior legal abilities. So, quite a handy word for us word imps to add to our arsenal. For once, the real meaning stands up to scrutiny. The pollsters, however, have chosen Shari's meaning as their favourite. Well done, Shari.

a pettifogger is someone who always tries to avoid answering direct questions by changing the subject -- your boss when you ask about your career path with the company; you teenaged child when you ask what he/she has been up to...

Anonymous - thank you for your wonderful comment. If only the rest of the world could discover the blog as you have done! However, in the meantime, I'm pleased you're pleased. On another note, perhaps a "pettifogger" is a person who sexes chickens incorrectly!

In the days of olde when ladies wore dresses with hoops in, doctors would make them use a pettifogger to spray a warm mist under their skirts to prevent infection in the private parts.
