Ballonet

A ballonet is the air compartment in a balloon or airship. Not nearly as interesting as some of the meanings on the blog for this word. Thanks for your contributions over Easter. Back to a word a day again now - and congrats to Albow for the winning meaning on the poll.

A moment of indecision about whether you can be bothered to suggest going as far as erecting the actual proper net, experienced just before you try brightly to goad the family into a game of beach volleyball.

Ballonet. N. a village idiot, usually in, but not limited to, the Easter Islands.
Marcos Ballonet was a failed aspiring dictator of the Easter Islands. After the ascension of Chile's Pinochet to bloody rule in 1973, Julian Ballonet decided he needed to establish his own brutal Latin American totalitarian state on the Easter Islands, his home and finally get some "respect." Sadly, for him, as there were only 4 other people who knew of him and only 1 genuinely scared of him, his delusions ended in public ridicule on May 24, 1975 during what is now known as the Tirade of the Yawnfactory. Delusional village idiots to this day are known as Ballonets.

The ballonet (ball-o-net) is a parent's dream. It keeps all the balls (basketball, soccerball, kids' balls, etc.)organized in the garage.

You tie the net like a hammock in any corner and keep all the balls in there. No more rolling around and no more "lost" balls. Of course, the key is to put the ball there when you are done with it.

Ballonet is the hole in a soccer net that the ball always goes through once a goal is scored.

Ballonet, otherwise known as The Dance of a Thousand Balls.
Only the very skilled should ever attempt this as it requires maintaining many balls in the air all at one time.....Mothers of young children are very good at Ballonet.

In fact...
It's a smaller balloon inside an airship gasbag. It can be inflated to maintain pressure inside the gasbag, and therefore crucially maintain the shape of the airship. Air pressure drops the higher you go. An airship can lose gas through safety valves if the outside air pressure drops. When the airship comes down again, the increasing air pressure outside can crumple or distort the gasbag. Not required in Zeppelins as they had a metal skeleton covered in fabric which maintained the aerodynamic shape.
