Nyctalopia
Nyctalopia, as Shari pointed out, is night-blindness. My dictionary, oddly enough, also describes it as "the inability to see clearly, except at night". That seems like the opposite to me, but who knows. Some effort obviously went into today's blog meanings. Well done, word imps. Floribunda's meaning took the voters' fancy and is pronounced winner on the day. Great work, Floribunda.

It's an unpleasant condition in which the patient's nyctates drop off, resulting in scabrousness, rickets, fulminating humours and malodourous scrofula. Not a topic for breakfast-time conversation, thank you very much.
Nyctalopia is a compulsion to tie and untie shoelaces -- it extends to opening and closing buckles, and to repeatedly ripping open velcro closures on shoes and sandals. Tevo sandals are especially beloved by nyctalopians!
Nyctalopia is something I personally live with (night-blindness).
Nyctalopia is a giddy feeling you get after a big win.
The division finalists' nyctalopia stayed with them as they celebrated their victory at a bar.
Nyctalopia is a condition suffered by married men and by extension their wives.
Once the man marries, or lives with his partner, he becomes incapable of remembering simple everyday things such as where he left his car keys, mobile phone, if the mobile phone is charged and so on.
The wife though not suffering directly from the syndrome suffers indirectly as she then has to remember where his keys are, the mobile phone and to charge the mobile phone as well as all of the above for helfself.
There is also early onset nyctalopia which occurs when a couple are dating and not yet moved in. This is particularly traumatic for the woman as she has to know all the nooks and crannies for lost things in his home as well as hers.
If, like me, you are married to a nyctalopic there are some practical steps you can take. Buy him a man bag, that way he can put everything in one place himself and as long as you know where the bag is then you are one step ahead. I also gather up car keys, phone and man bag and put them on the kitchen counter in advance of him leavng the house.
(Honestly these do work!)
