Cloop
Cloop is the sound of a cork being drawn. Well, of course! Who didn't know that? Me, for one. But now you tell me, it is rather obvious. Interesting array of meanings on the blog today. After much fun and games with the voting process, I can announce that the favourite was the invention of Brian O Vretanos. Well done, Brian.

Cloop is pronounced "Claw-op". It is a Dutch word, and is a kind of stew traditionally served at parties or other large gatherings. Each guest brings some ingredients and adds them to the Cloop. (Did you know that originally the phrase "Go Dutch" referred to an equal contribution of food to the meal rather than money?)
It is most usually found in the phrase "overspicing the cloop", which refers to the one person who spoils things for everyone else.
Cloop - collective noun for sticky things gathered together. e.g. a cloop of slugs.

Cloop is a condition of the lower colon. People who have a dose of cloop tend to have rather yellowish and bulging eyes caused by the effort of trying to rid themselves of cloop. A good dose of prunes generally helps but if all else fails, castor oil usually does the trick.
A cloop is a small sail that used to be hoisted on the old tea clippers when nearly becalmed. It goes out beyond the tops'l and is used to give those extra few square inches of canvas. Hence the line in the Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner: "The sun burned on from dawn til dusk and ne'er the cloop did flap..."
A cloop is like glue, as in being a third or fifth wheel, but hanging around anyway.

Hi Word Imp,
For some mysterious reason, I can't see the poll today. Plus, I even refreshed the page like three times. Any idea why I can't see it?!?
Thanks for the heads up about the poll Aaron. I can't get it either! I went to the poll hosting site and couldn't get through so I think it's an issue there. We'll give it a bit of time and see what happens. I'll keep on it. Thanks. Sharon

Hi Word Imp,
I saw the idea about the book and silly illustrations of the definitions and thought I’d make myself available for the job. See my blog entry for a sampling of my work. http://thechindo.blogspot.com/2007/02/scallywag-sketches.html
Okay. Now, for my definition.
Cloop - A public pool that has a negative reputation for cleanliness.
Similar to the origin for the word Detour (Alternative "Route D" spelled backwards) "Cloop" was coined when "Pool C" at the Hillsboro Aquatic Center in Hillsboro, Oregon became unswimmably unclean through a series of unfortunate events. Apparently, a huge ball of hair clogged up the water filtration system on the same day that the first "all-toddler" swim lessons began for the summer. This was in the days before leak-free swim diapers, so the results made the pool less than appealing. Within the hour J. Troxell, the newly-crowned winner of the local park center's Sausage and Pie Eating Contest, decided to celebrate by performing his famous "Front Flip to Belly Flop" dive. As he clumsily climbed the ladder he caught his first full whiff of the pool's increasing stench. Determined to do his dive and unwilling to disappoint his fans he proceeded to the front of the board. It was there that he lost his... resolve. Suddenly ill and swooning, Troxell fell forward into the pool following through the air the contents of his stomach. Incidentally, Troxell fell in such a way that his body did in fact flip over once and land hard in a perfect, flat belly flop.
It took the maintenance crew an entire week to drain, clean, disinfect, and refill Pool C in which time, the events of the previous weekend had become well known throughout the town. When it reopened the following Saturday, no one would swim in, or allow their children near, Pool C. To this day Pool C remains crystal clear and clean, yet no one dares to use this legendary Cloop.
