Gnomon

The gnomon is the bit on a sun dial which shows the time by casting a shadow. So there you go. Another fascinating piece of information. I very much enjoyed the meanings on the blog today and agree with the voters who picked Sara's as the winning entry. Well done, Sara.

to begin with: what a beautiful soul you are to put gnomes in your friends' gardens! that's SO cool! i might have to steal that idea from you and do that myself.

now for the definition:

Gnomon. N. - a commoner in the gnostic disciple tradition.

Some of the forgotten gospel writers had their own everyday followers and they were known as gnomons. The gnomons were often forgetful, however and proved instrumental in the misplacing of the gospel of Thomas for almost two millenia.

Gnomon is a person who collects gnomes. Some people collect gnomes, some collect unicorns (unicornoms). Most of us collect something.

The gnomon couldn't resist buying another gnome to add to her collection. She had just the perfect place for it.

The gnomons were a radical group that fought for the right to abolish Mondays. Their original name "God! Not Monday Again" was considered too lengthy to write on their placards, so taking a leaf out the the "TGI Friday's!" book they shortened it GNoMons.

Gnomon is an irrational fear of gnomes or trolls. It's not so common now, but it was a real problem back in earlier times.

A gnomon is a grammatical term used to describe a word which almost sounds the same said frontwards and backwards. e.g. gnomon and nomong.
