Ponceau

Dated Monday 12 October (confusion caused by time difference and late blogging) If I understand my dictionary correctly - which isn't always easy - ponceau is the official colour of a bright red poppy. Fascinating. Actually, that page of the dictionary is full of interesting p words, but you'll have to wait for those. I loved your inventive meanings, as always, and enjoyed the variety very much. Thinks! had a funny meaning and the voters agreed. Well done!

Ponceau is indeed a French word. It is a needlework stitch that is used to work larger areas of water in tapestries.

By the way, thanks to the wordimps every time I see my little girl's snotty nose I think of Thinks's definition for Drail

Ponceau is a strong flavoured garlic sausage found in the Tarn et Lot district of France.

It is made principally of garlic and pork with a few strange herbs chucked in as well.

It is quite disgusting!

Ponceau is an overpriced, imported mineral water, sold exclusively in Brighton's gay bars.

Ponceau is Cajun corn pone. It is very spicy, and best taken with lots of water.

A Ponceau (capital P)is a male resident of Ponce, a small French region noted for its wines which are sold under the name Poncee. (N.B. A female from that region is a Poncelle.)

Parcel Ponceau was a famous french mime artist who was never heard to speak on stage. His last words when he died in 1956 were, "Huh?" Mystics believe he spent some time trying to get out of a glass coffin which wasn't actually there. In his will he rather generously left nothing to his friends and relatives. His gravestone is inscribed "Will speak later..."

When people use powder, the powder that falls off onto the dressing table or the floor is "ponceau." When cleaning, it's better to spread it around the floor than to just clean it immediately. And there's a decadence to using so much powder that there is byproduct, so those people are "poncy."

I believe this is a complex pirouette-style manoeuvre used in synchronised swimming.
