Orfe

I was wrong, as we all knew. An orfe is not a dwarf elf. It's a kind of goldfish. Unfortunately, I can provide no further information than that. Those fishy types who also enjoy research, can find out more at their leisure. It was great to see some more new word imps in the mix today. Thanks for joining us and I hope you come back soon. One of those new word imps won on the poll too. Well done, Dawn Treader. Hope to see you again soon.

Orfe is the nautical term for the rubber tyres that are attached to small piers and jetty's to decrease the damage to recreational boats using the facilities. The orfe act as a cushion or buffer between the boat and the wooden jetty, so if the boat makes close contact it is hitting against a rubber tyre, and not the wooden jetty.

Orfe was a Norse goddess known for her rapid changes of mind and heart, to the detriment of her many suitors.

Orfe has to do with the way dogs make sound. Vets understand it, but few others discuss it. Sometimes when a dog loses his voice, the vet needs to put something down his orfice. And the idea of a law enforcement officer being "orficious" comes from him barking orders at people unnecessarily and constantly.

Orfe is the name of un unfinished opera by Verdi. It sadly never got performed because no one could figure out how he intended it to end.

(Magdalene...PMSL, how true!!)

I think this is a technical term for one of two possible options when you've really already decided on the alternative, and are merely complicating things orfe-heartedly (sorry, couldn't resist).

Orfe (n) - A small breed of dog, related to the Border Terrier. Often mistaken for other small breeds and so the shout 'Get that Orfe my ankles' does not necessarily mean there is an Orfe around.
