Have fun with a new word each day. I'll choose a word. You make up a meaning.

Litotes
A litotes is an ironical understatement, especially using a negative to express a positive. My dictionary gives the example "no small feat" meaning "huge feat". There you go. I'm a writer and I didn't know that. Congrats to Sandy Feet for a great invented meaning.
Litotes are glowing fossils. Somehow flourescent minerals in suspension flowed into the host rock when the fossil was still being formed and it's all too technical for me, but the glowing ferns are the prettiest litotes of all!
Litote (lï-tö-t) was the slave of a very luxurious maiden. Litote was known for her great poems and wonderful and breathtaking speeches. She herself helped stop slavery. No one really notices, but a"speech of slavery" was done by her too. Litote was a determined girl.
Defining Litotes is no easy task. Litotes are forms of betting whereby the gambler lies about how much money he has and the betting agency lies about how much it will pay out if he wins. A most complicated form of betting, it is best practised when inebriated.
A litotes is a skin-tight one- piece garment covering the whole body, usually worn by ballet dancers (not to be confused with the more popular leotard which leaves the arms and legs uncovered).
Litotes are the units of energy given off by a glowing firefly. When you see lots of flickering fireflies, there are litotes in the air, and if you are amidst litote-laden air, you may exerience a sense of euphoria.
1. I choose an obscure dictionary word.
2. You invent a wacky meaning and add it as a comment.
3. After a certain time I list the true meaning and choose a winner for the invented meaning.
There are no prizes, just lots of fun!
Remember, children use this site too.
I am a children's author who has had a handful of books published by trade publishers. They're in book shops and libraries. I've also had a sackful of books published by educational publishers. These are mainly found in schools. I love words and that's why I invented this blog site.

"A litote is a small toad in Gaelic," explained Paul and Hanly.
The Furfey twins further explained, "If you say little toad very quickly, you'll see what we mean."
"Little toad, little toad, litote."

When your life is overcome by continual random urges to eat chocolate, you have caught Litotes.
Litotes are minature suitcases that are easily stashed under your seat while flying.
