Simoom

A simoom occurs chiefly in the Arabian desert. It's a suffocatingly hot dusty wind which sweeps through a narrow path and is gone within minutes. Makes me glad I'm not a desert dweller. The invented meanings were especially enjoyable and poll voters chose the meaning suggested by Realityjunkie as the best of the best today. Well done, RJ.

Simoom is a proper name for a woman.
The name means "heats my desire". Men call their lovers this pet name which goes back to Ancient Mesopotamia.

"Sheik Farhad, J-Lo is coming through town on her world-wide tour," said the demur assistant.

"Simoom," the sheik replied wistfully.

A simoom is that dreamy state of mind beyond serenity.
"I found myself in a simoom as I walked along the water in the warm moonlight.."
Like that!

A Simoom is a very small monkey that lives in the jungles of Java.

These are very shy creatures but will creep into villages and steal little bits and pieces of food. They also like to leave a 'calling card' wherever they visit.

Simoom:
A special night occurring once every 6 months where the moon makes one do silly things like dance around in the street.

(Of course that’s just called Tuesday for me.)

A simoom is a type of mermaid. It's an old sailor's contraction of "Sea-woman", but this particular mermaid differs from the usual type in that although it's upper half is a woman, the lower half is an octopus. Legend has it that they lured ships near them, and then plucked sailors from their ships using their tentacles.

To simoom means to walk in a public place in a particularly affected and self conscious manner in order to attract the attentions of the opposite sex.

'Angelica rose from her seat, casually flicked a long strand of hair over one shoulder and with an exaggerated tilt of her slim hips, slowly and coolly simoomed across the floor.'

Ah yes, Magdalene, it must have been Angelica that passed in front me in the hotel bar last night... but I considered that it was her waist, not her hips, that were slim. I ignored her, of course...

In my understanding, a simoom is an oceanographic event that occurs about once in ten years in the south west Pacific. It's do do with upwellings and currents and stuff, and there's always a massive anchovy harvest during a simoom year.

Simoom (n) - a vacuous moment in a conversation, which sucks all previous thoughts into its eternal oblivion. Once thought to be initiated by voluptuous natural blondes speaking in nonsequitors, it has recently been discovered that its genesis is found in male drool stringing from lip to bar top.
