Ogham
Ogham (also spelled ogam) is an ancient alphabet that I, for one, have never heard of until now. Apparently it had 20 letters and was used in Britain and Ireland. Not sure how similar it was to our current alphabet. Perhaps the linguists out there can bring us up to speed on that. Thanks to Thinks! for another great invented meaning. You're top of the poll once again. Your dedication to Word Imperfect is appreciated - especially considering you're a cat!

Ogham - this is the prehistoric forerunner to a telegram which in itself has become obsolete. If a caveman wanted to get a message to another distant caveman he would send an ogham. So called because of their frequent use of the word 'og'. The message was tied to the leg of a wild hog (hence ham) which was sent on its way with a sharp smack on the rear end.

Over time the name of the communal settlement of Old Gullableham contracted to "Ogham".? Its members have always been dedicated to the most current popular social issue, (encouraging it or stamping it out, as the case may be).? Oghams numbers diminished alarmingly after the heady & dire "Population Explosion" years of the 1970's.? Sadly the heart just seemed to goout of the Oghamians's when their earnest & learned celebrity spokespersons, Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward, gradually ceased broadcasting apocallyptic predictions on behalf of the movement and moved on to salad dressings.?? (But those of us who saw it can never forget Joanne's sincere confession that, had she only known at the time the horrors awaiting us througfh over population, she would never have brought 4 children into the world.)?
Today new members, fired with near religious zeal, are flocking back to Ogham, infusing new fervor into old Oghamians's for the lateste disaster befalling earth.? (They're having much more fun in AuntiBecks village in Greenland...they get my vote.)"
