A chitterling is a small black bird with yellow-tipped wings. It's often found in rural areas.
Actually, the small black bird with yellow-tipped wings referred to is a "Yellow Spotted Chitter."
Chitterlings [plural] are the fatty parts of the bird, leftover after everything else is eaten, that are deep fried until very crisp, then eaten as a snack.
Chitterlings became popular out of necessity during the Great Depression of the 1930's when food was scarce and waste frowned upon.
Chitterling. The secret garden of Lady Chatterley where the rare butterfly species known as the Chitterling butterfly announces its return only when it rains making a sound similar to a faint whistle. In the famous novel by D.H. Lawrence, Lady Chatterly frolicked in the rainy meadow with the Chitterling butterfly dancing around her making an excited whistle as she danced.
Chitterling is the sound your teeth make when you have run outside in your nightie on a cold, frosty, foggy rubbish collection day after you have been rudely awoken by the sound of the rubbish truck making it's stop, start, stop, start, approach down your street and you realise you've forgotten to put the rubbish out the night before.

like most non-verbs that end in -ing (farthing, pudding...), chitterling does have origins in an action. for instance, if you're poor in ireland, you probably farth a lot, so your coin is known as a farthing. likewise, every time you pudd, you waste milk, so heated milk with sugar and tapioca is known as pudding.
since we know that to chitter means to overdance, then a chitterling is someone who does just that. you know a chitterling by the annoying habit he or she has of pointing every time a song says "you." also, the chitterling holds up two fingers every time a song says "to," "too," or "two." they hold both hands over their hearts for "love", and they hold a thumbs up for "good," "great," and "wonderful."
chitterlings also love the supremes for some reason, although not all supremes lovers are chitterlings.
Chitterlings are the noises made by the trembling jaws of small children. The noises are known to immediately precede a piercing wail, a manifestation of temper generally triggered by the application of reasonable expectations by said children's parental units.
A CHI-tterling is a Chinese term for small bursts of life energy produced when a Hong Kong trader gives a discount of exactly one pound sterling.
Considering the number of Chinese traders, and all the money they were losing in form of Chi-tterling discounts - the Chinese Government passed a law forbidding any trader from giving such discounts.
This law is said to have resulted in a boom in Chinese economy. Also since then, Chinese traders are known for NEVER giving you a discount.
