Scrimshank
To scrimshank is to shirk your duties. Such a person is, of course, a scrimshanker. My dictionary refers to the term as "military slang". Perhaps some of our North American word imps secretly knew that. I'm glad I know this word now. I shall enjoy using it at the earliest possible opportunity. Thanks to Pami Sami for her take on scrimshank. We loved that meaning and it was a clear poll winner today. Great work, PS.

Scrim-shanks are similar to lamb shanks only that instead of real meat, a collection of any off-cuts from the butchers floor are used. Commonly used where the cook is running into financial trouble.
Caution: if you suspect you have been served scrim-shanks, move to a table near the tiolet.
This is a complicated word, and I am surprised it has developed into common useage.
A rugby player who is afraid of the scrum is called a scrimmer. And a scrimshank (srim's hank) is the handkercheif he (or she) uses to wipe his (or her) nose after blubbing in pure terror at the thought of entering a scrum.
There are no scrimmers or scrimshanks amongst the All Blacks.
It's related to scrimshaw, which is the engraving on whales' teeth that old whaling sailors did to pass the time. Scrimshank is similar, but the engraving takes place on the flipper bones.
Scrimshank was the original term for the house elf (Harry Potter), but the author decided that house elf would be better.
Scrimshank is what Sanskrit was before it became a written language. Few scholars are truly fluent in it anymore.
Scrimshanks are the little screws that you are left with when you have taken something apart to fix it and then put it back together again. This term can also be applied to the nuts and bolts or whatever that seem to have no logical use when you self-assemble something. Our kitchen drawer is full of scrimshanks.

Scarification was practiced widely upon the faces of Maori warriors who wished to look fierce in battle, and attractive to women. In Australia this skin carving is found today mainly in parts of Arnhem Land. In Africa, the Baule people of the Ivory Coast used scarification as mark of civilization. Without scrimshank marks one would not be considered part of the Baule culture.
Today scarification is used in the United States to prove that one got stupid drunk.

Scrimshanks have to step twice as quickly as long shanks as it's an old (deferential) term for a person with disproportionately short legs. (Scrimp - short: shanks - legs)
When choosing clothes they unfortunately have to buy the long jacket and the extra short trousers.

Scrimshank: Is when you give someone a five dollar bill to grab you a vanilla latte and you know it only costs $3.75. This person never gives you the change, they are scrimshankers and you have been scrimshanked!
Scrimshankers are known for not mentioning this left over change, I think they consider it a delivery fee but we all know they were going to starbucks anyway.

A scrimshank (n.) is a person who is incapable of throwing anything away that s/he thinks might come n handy in the future, no matter how small, old or insignificant it seems at the time. A scrimshank's family often have to put up with shelves and cupboards full of rusty screws, single shoe laces and small lengths of string rolled together in a ball.
