Orrery

An orrery is a clockwork model of the planetary system - something we should all have been well aware of. However, I'm happy to admit that it was news to me. Fascinating array of invented meanings today! Thanks for all your contributions. Well done especially to Raelha who's made it to the top of the poll today.

Orrery is a term surreptitiously introduced by british railway companies into their timetables as a means of avoiding late arrival times.
Where a service is listed as orrery it indicates that it runs approximately every hour. Therefore it can rarely be late. Derivations are: half-orrery and, on the rare occasion, orrerably late.....

On 2nd thoughts - Of course, if you can't say your 'R's then it means -'Oh, were we?'

An Orrery is a reading made by a clairvoyant known as an orrerist, and is based on the subject's dreams.

I had my orrery prepared from my recurring dreams about the executive washroom, and it said that I would have a long and successful career in the cleaning trade...

Orrery is an adjective used to describe an amazing feat of aerodynamics in athleticism. Original reference is to Bobby Orr's famous overtime goal in 1970 where he quite literally flew through the air while winning the Stanley Cup for the Boston Bruins.

It is used often in sports that involve air time such as skateboarding and snowboarding.

That was orrery, dude!

n orrery is a key that somehow gets bent so that one cant fit it into the keyhole. The bent is so minimal that you cant really see it so one keeps on forcing it thereby increasing the bent so that it becomes more of an orrery.
At this point one throws the Orrery away and breaks open the lock!

An orrery is someone who does not know when to stop talking. This is the person who always makes you late if you run into them and you're on your way somewhere. The crazy thing about orreries is that somehow they make normal people feel rude for trying to dismiss themselves during conversation.

*I'd like to note that I think it's absolutely hilarious that 3 people tied on tribology. Maybe that should be the new meaning...a three way tie. Thanks for the votes by the way :)

An orrery is a place of meditation specifically designed for those who have trouble making up their mind. Inside an orrery you will find sheets of paper made for listing the pros and cons of decisions, and also orrerers. These are people chosen for their level-headedness and common sense who are available at all hours should orrerees wish to test out an idea on them before making a definitive decision.

It is a little known fact that the Clash song, 'Should I stay or Should I go?' was written about the band's musings during time they spent in an orrery. Only the orrerer on duty at the time knows what answer was arrived at by the band.

Orrery is a tasteless display of gold jewelry. Men seem especially prone to this condition (Mr T for example), but anyone who walks around wearing an excess of gold necklaces, bracelets, earrings, etc. is guilty of orrery.

Orrery (n) - 1) a monastic vow. The celebrant of this vow chants, sings, prays, speaks, or preaches at every waking moment. 2) one who undertakes a orrery vow.

Visiting the beautiful little abbey, and looking for a moment of peace, I realized upon entering that I had made a mistake. Swirling around me like planets in a busy solar system were a dozen orreries, devotedly practicing their vows.

An orrery is a jar where an evil teacher keeps the severed ears of her students.

The root is German as is the practice of dragging naughty students by their ears.
