Doxy
Doxy has two distinct meanings. Firstly, a doxy is a beggar's wench. Who knew? Secondly, a doxy is an opinion on theology. Quite varied meanings, as you can tell, but there you go. The invented meanings were also varied and gave me much cause for hilarity. Thanks for that. The contribution from Wunx~ sneaked through on the poll. Well done, Wunx~.

Doxy's Midday Walkers - were a tribute band who had a particularly easy job singing the songs of Dexy's Midnight Runners because the latter's lyrics always sounded like a drunk lying in the gutter.
The only words they needed to know were 'Come on Eileen' and the rest comprised only vowel sounds i.e.ooh rye ooh rye ooh rye ooh rye eh, a wah wah woh a wah wah wah etc.

I'm amazed at how many of these words were in my father's (now 85 yrs. old) vocabulary as I was growing up.
So in his honor all I'm going to say today is if you get caught in a flivver with a doxy you'll end up in the hoosegow!!
A doxy is an evil fairy who is conjured by the speaking of her name. Doxies have a wicked sense of humor and since being called both annoys and delights her, the person who conjured her is given a wish that ultimately turns into a curse unless one is very clever.

To put up a fey word like doxy,

Doxy is similar to the word proxy, however it refers to a dog stand in. Doxies are used on movie sets to fill in for the main actor dog during rehersals and "run-throughs"
The doxy was a kind of 18th century carriage that deliberately had wheels of slightly different sizes. The idea was that passengers would be gently lulled to sleep by the movement. Unfortunately, it tended to make them feel sick. Later the word came to be used to describe any vehicle that was a bit wobbly.
Thanks for the votes for curare everyone!
However, I appear to have come over a bit doxy and can't seem to come up with a good definition for today's word.
