Tortile

Tortile means twisted, curved or coiled. I probably could have figured that out if I'd thought about it hard enough. But I'd rather read the hilarious invented meanings on the blog instead. Aviva's meaning was a runaway winner on the poll. Well done, again Aviva.

Tortile - having a surface like an omelette i.e. leathery, lumpy and bumpy with assorted muted vegetable colours.

As a consequence of spending many idle hours in the hot sun quaffing lager and slobbering over fried food, he skin had taken on a tortile complexion.

tortile (adj) - repeatedly doing something the wrong way while not paying attention.

For example, the checkout assistant who unsuccessfully scans an item multiple times whilst chatting to her colleague.

I can't imagine a perfect etymology than to liken the "tortile" person to a hard-working tortoise (remember the hare & tortoise race?). So to me, a tortile person is one who is hardworking and devoted towards achieving his aim.

Tortile is an expression for "at the speed of a turtle". Example: Jack was short, skinny, and always tortile. Pronounced: TOR-TILL

waiting4jk has used the Southern definition and pronunciation.

In Northern climes it is a slang word that refers to the speed that Southerners speak or move. It is quite derogatory and shocking to see it on a politcally correct blog such as this. It is commonly pronounced Tor-tile. (Not that I would ever say it).

A tortile is a person who is lawsuit happy, fond of filing frivolous lawsuits seeking damages for the most ridiculous things.

Example: "Did you hear that Charlie sued the dry cleaners for $65 million dollars because they lost a pair of his pants? He is such a tortile!"

tortile adj. Relating to or concerning a romantic relationship between two individuals, one of which is incarcerated.

"Mariah decided against going to her high school reunion, not wanting to face questions about her tortile marriage."

[I also would like to blame this definition on the weather. It's not so bad here in Portland, but it sure is nasty in Tierra del Fuego today.]

a tortile is a cross between a tourist and an imbecile, which kind of describes most tourist behavior.ex. "look at the tortile wearing that thong bathing suit and ridiculous beanie in the restaurant, where do these people come from?"

tortile (n)- a rather annoying person, sort of a cross between a recluse and a endless debater whose own ideas are always right (in his mind). A strange character, the tortile usually holds strange beliefs which are bound to offend someone. Once he has shared his opinions with everyone in the neighborhood and attracted the ire of those who disagree with him, the tortile, suddenly afraid for his life, will retreat into his house and not come out for at least a year, upon which he will proceed to immediately restart the cycle, with a whole new repertoire of obscure opinions. A tortile is not fun at all to live by.

i.e. Sitting by the open window, I could hear the neighborhood tortile clashing fiercely with a neighbor on whether or not purple orangutans lived on Neptune.

tortile (n.) a Kind of wall and flooring tile favored by the inhabitants of Tortuga. Not as common as ceramic, and not as expensive as porcelain, tortile takes on a warm and yet shiney glow when fired slowly over open flames for 23 days. Making tortile is a tedious project, but it does provide the island inhabitants with a fair wage and, of course, lovely floors.

Tortile (adj.) a person who always regrets their order of cake immediately after noticing the kind their neighbor has ordered.

When Maggie asked John why he was staring at his chocolate case, he admitted he was tortile, and wished he's ordered carrot cake like hers. That was their last date.

Tortile: The state of being on your back and having no hope of getting up. From tortoise and futile, it is particularly common in children who are loaded down with backpacks that are twenty pounds heavier than they are.

Ex. Little Johnny accepted his tortile state (or tortility) and waited calmly for his parents to find him.
