Kymograph

A kymograph is an instrument, as many of you figured out. It's used to record variations in pressure, with sound waves being the example given in my dictionary. Lots of fun was had by all with today's meanings and the winning entry on the poll was supplied by J Morgetron. Congratulations and thanks to everyone for dropping by.

Kymograph (v.) To Kymograph is to dance like Kylie Minogue.

Example: On their night out the girls kymographed on the dance floor in homage to their favourite pop diva.

No,No,No it's rapping to a Kylie Minogue song. No,No,No a Kymograph is actually a recording of Kylie on an old record. No,No,No it's a photo of Kylie. No,No,No it's a device to measure Kylie obsession. Sort of like a lie detector.

Kymograph, also Cymograph. A tool used to measure waviness in all things.

Derived from Greek Mythology as told in the Theogony - a well told poem by Hesiod.

Kymo was one of the 50 Nereids who were the daughters of Nereus (The Old Man of the Sea) and Doris (The Daughter of Okeanos who was one of the original Titans.

Kymo translates roughly as 'the wavy one' as her hair was so ... well ... wavy.

Nice word, Jason.

Kymograph (n): device used for measuring the swelling level of pregnant women's ankles. It uses a scale of 1 (not swollen at all) to 200 (about to explode).

Example: Mergatroid was shocked to read the kymograph's reading of 199 because in her opinion, her ankles *felt* normal. Then again, she hadn't actually seen her ankles for over two weeks. Ah, well, as they say, Kymographs never lie!

kymograph: a device used for measuring the angle, and timing of limbs extended from the water in synchronized swimming events.

The XXIV Olympiad was marred by a bloody water fight precipitated by the miscalibration of the of the first kymograph.

-Word Imp, this is a great blog. We used to hold Blarney parties, and later Balderdash parties when the game changed names, but nothing really beats the use of the ol' unabridged dictionary. Thanks for doing this.

Jason - you beat me to the nereid punch. ;-)

Kymograph: Measuring the activity of children. Some are like the Energizer Bunny (keeps on going, and going, and...), couch potatoes (how much time is spent watching TV, playing Nitendo, on the computer, etc.).

Many observed a big difference in the kymographs of children at the beginning of summer to the end of summer. Some get restless and bored by the end of summer and some are just as active as usual.

Kymograph - an instrument for recording the moment-by-moment stress level of those betting on the Kentucky Derby. Most often used by wives on their husbands to see if they are really telling the truth about not betting on the horses anymore.

"Just before Barbaro crossed the finish line, Martin's kymograph reading was off the charts and he knew he'd be sleeping on the couch tonight."

A kymograph is used as an aid in the adjustment of chimes. It is a device containing multiple narrow extensions of different lengths, which have been set to vibrate when tones of the appropriate frequency are reached. To check a particular chime, strike the chime and see if the kymograph portion designated for that particular chime vibrates. If it does not vibrate, or if it vibrates poorly, or if more than one vibrates, readjust the chime and try again.

But my name is Aviva :)

If only I'd seen the "other" option...

A kymograph is a type of fruit, native to the island of Dominica. It is sort of a cross between a guava and a kiwi, light and watery in texture, with very thin skin and a harder, but still edible core.

It is frequently served as a garnish with roasted pig.

Kymograph (n) The plot from a Kymometer, measuring the juice content of (for example) fruit.

"If I had a kymometer, I wouldn't come back from the supermarket with ripe looking oranges that are shrivelled up inside"

[From Gk: Chymos = "juice", grapho = "write"]

(n)a process invented by New Age scientist, Kylan Mowbern in Sedona, Arizona in 1987(the year of the much touted 'Harmonic Convergence') for measuring the presence of meteor dust. The dust was said to radiate an energy unknown in earth elements, and thought to heighten sensitivty to extra-terrestrials. Vials of the gathered dust were sold to New Agers convening for the convergence on top of Bell Rock. Kymo (as he became known) left the Convergence a wealthy man, and has not been seen since.

The only Kymograph in existence was created to measure the number of times Tonto could say "Kymo (pronounced KEY-MO) Saabi" in an episode of The Lone Ranger without driving the intended audience to distraction.
Its effectiveness, or lack of, has been hotly debated by those select few in the know ever since.
