Have fun with a new word each day. I'll choose a word. You make up a meaning.

Suffragan
A suffragan is an assistant bishop. Not sure how much suffering is involved there. Perhaps some suffragans out there will be able to throw a bit of light on that. Well done to The Encourager for winning on the poll today.

Suffragan: A repeat offender of suffragette crime (police slang, early 20th century)
A suffragan is a person who insists on using old rags for cleaning, instead of more modern cleaning items like sponges, paper towels, disposable wipes, etc.

A suffragan is a knitted hood worn under a jacket and hat in very cold places. The closest modern equivalent is a ski mask, but suffragans didn't have face-coverings, because people would wear a scarf over the whole setup.
A 'suffragan' is a husband who has to endure his wife's insistance on owning an Aga cooker because it's a status symbol; even if the kitchen isn't large enough and becomes unbearably hot from the heat produced 24hrs a day. (Agas are cast iron solid fuel ovens enamelled in very trendy colours for expensive kitchens in the UK)(Derivation: suffer an aga)
The Suffragun is the losest order of monks in the 16th century. These were the servant monks that did the most menial tasks in a monestary. If you were a suffragan you were always the last to be served and the first to be called upon to serve.
Suffragan is a new analgesic which has taken the medical world by storm. Not only does it relieve the usual headaches, flu symptoms, backache and menstrual pain but it reportedly prevents them from ever happening again!
1. I choose an obscure dictionary word.
2. You invent a wacky meaning and add it as a comment.
3. After a certain time I list the true meaning and choose a winner for the invented meaning.
There are no prizes, just lots of fun!
Remember, children use this site too.
I am a children's author who has had a handful of books published by trade publishers. They're in book shops and libraries. I've also had a sackful of books published by educational publishers. These are mainly found in schools. I love words and that's why I invented this blog site.
