Corundum

Corundum is a crystallized mineral. Something like sapphires and rubies, apparently, but with a less romantic name. Congratulations to realityjunkie and any other word imps who've added new babies to their families this year. Very exciting and thanks for the news! Keep up the great work. We need more word imps! And congratulations as well to Bea N Random for the great win on the poll today.

Particularly relevant at this time of year, a corundum occurs where a motley collection of tone deaf carol singers knock at your front door. They only know one verse of a Silent Night and not very well. They merrily bellow their way through it snorting and guffawing when they get the words wrong before falling into an embarrassed silence.

Are you coming corundum singing tonight lads?

A corundum is a kind of Indian flatbread stuffed with coriander. Delicious!

And thanks for my votes for benthos :-)

It's a little-known brass instrument, which is huge, loud and capable of emitting notes too low for human hearing. Appears only infrequently in orchestras due to its reputation for causing serious building damage when played.

A cordunum is the opposite of a standing ovation. It's when the audience is so unimpressed that they request (rather loudly and rudely) that the performers leave the stage.

Corundum is how George Bush pronounced conundrum.
The conundrum is that a corundum is the machine that sections jigsaw puzzles into pieces!! How about that?

A corundum is a situation so convolutedly confusing that there's nothing to do but say "Cor, Blimey," but that would only make things worse, so it's better to say nothing.

I hope it's just my computer, but in the past few days when I've tried to vote on the poll, my browser closes. I'm on Safari on Mac OS 10.4 (In case it's not just my computer and there's a more general problem to report.) It's not quite a corundum, but it's frustrating for me not to be able to vote. I'm really enjoying this game.

I think corundum is a grainy and abrasive substance --like ground salt or shards of glass.

"Corundum" is an old sailing term for the last substantial wind before your ship hits the doldrums.

Dear Word Imp, As this is a family blog and it is the festive season I was most surprised to see the word Cor***um on your blog. Where I come from it is a swear word, usually uttered to express surprise at something. According to the Edwards Exact Lexicon of Vulgar Expeltives its origin is unknown but it could have something to do with Merriam's answer!

Corundum is a composite material used for kitchen and bathroom countertops. It is made mainly from decomposed corn cobs ground into a thick paste, colored, and then spread out into large sheets, to be cut to size for those seeking a trendy yet earth-friendly decor in their homes.

"Oh Gertrude, I do admire your bathroom vanity, especially the nubby texture - is that Corundum??"

Corundum. N. - the antiquated and proper name for the navel, or belly button (Amer. slang.)

"Dr. Jenkins knew the incision was going to have to circumvent the corundum. But as he had not practiced that cut in 23 years since medical school, for the first time in his career, he felt unsure."

Corundum is the euphoric feeling a woman gets after giving birth. Usually followed by a fordumdum, which is the act of forgiving the father for putting her through all that.

Incidentally, regular wordimpstress Reality Junkie had a little corundum of her own on Thursday afternoon. Check out her blog for photographic evidence.

(she's yet to experience her fordumdum).
