Panoply
Panoply seems to have a variety of meanings including an impressive display, a suit of armour, any protective covering or ceremonial attire. I think this could become my new favourite word since it covers so many things (pun intended) - and that's not even counting the numerous meanings from the good people who visit my site with satisfying regularity. Special mention of course to Angelfeet who is a first time player. Thanks for trying out the blog, Angelfeet. The public voted and chose the anonymous entry which described romance in the kitchen. Panoply is something my husband and I do quite a lot. Panoply is a french word which means 'romance in the kitchen'. Panoply is like a lot of french words, where in french one word says everything, whereas in english that word can never really be expained. Such is panoply. Panoply means having one or more cooks in the kitchen, but only one chef. In our household, this entails my husband (the chef) and me (the cook). Panoply is me trying to be really helpful in the kitchen (usually by tasting a bit of everything going into the pans) and my husband (the chef) telling me politely, or sometimes not so politely, to GET OUT OF HIS KITCHEN. I don't usually mind this, as I am quite happy to be banished to the other side of the bench with a glass of wine, where I can continue to sneak the occasional titbit. Unfortunately, the opposite of panoply involves after dinner the chef being ensconced in the warm and comfy lounge with a glass of red wine, and the 'cook' in the kitchen wondering why 'chefs'to use every pot and pan in the household.

I love anonymous' definition. Panoply is derived from the latino languages, meaning bread, so panoply is a particular size of timber, produced to enable amateur woodworkers to make something in the shape of a . . . loaf.

Panoply is a unit of measure for how many panes of glass are in a window. Travelling tinkerers are trained in panoply and can, for a small fee, tell you how many panes of glass are in each of your windows. If the number is too few, this tinker can also add panes to each window to save on heating costs.
If I remember from Medical Terminology class, "pan" means all as in pandemic-global spread of disease. I think of "ply" as layers as in three-ply garbage bags.
So, I am going to say that panoply means all layers. A person is said to be panoplied when he/she dresses in all layers to stay warm. Or when a woman puts her "face" on; she is putting make-up on. She panoplied her face. It could also mean having a lot of characteristics of strength. He is so panoply! He's strong, strong-willed, and a go-getter. All the layers (panoply) of a successful businessman.
It's a construction term used to describe the interim stage where workers sheath the entire exterior of a new structure with plywood, in preparation for the final finish such as siding or stucco or brick.
A panoply is the regal tent that rulers reside in when they have joined their troops for battle: "Prince Philip retired to his panoply as the troops began to wash away the sweat of combat and secure the camp for night."
Panopoly -- the kitchen trading game. It was launched by Waddington's in 1926 but never gained much popularity.
It's the sound made by falling blocks, knocked over by an excited two year old. The blocks must be wooden and substantial, because plastic ones sound more like "tacopoly" (not to be confused with tacos, which the two year old fed to his grandmother's dog who subsequently got very sick on the carpet, which is another sound all together). Those cheap wooden square ones with alphabet letters don't make this sound either, because they are too light. This is a sound for the quality blocks, possibly made in Norway or some other country where they take children's toys seriously and know quality wood.

Panoply was the trade-name for those deep, clear umbrellas that go right down over your head and shoulders and you can see through. Developed by Panoply Co. Ltd (PCL)in the 1960s, their Mary Quant-type style made them all the rage for young women with minis (both the car and the skirt). Left behind by changes in fashion in the 1980s, the panoply umbrella fell from favour (despite its effectiveness in keeping mullets dry) and PCL was eventually taken over by ACME Corporation, the large multinational that had built its business selling mail-order devices to Wily E Coyote. Panoplies have enjoyed a recent resurgence amongst the newly-wealthy in China, but are unlikely to catch the Western imagination as they once did. Look out for a panoply in the next Austin Powers movie.
A panoply is a gathering of fathers. Panoplies are usually found on the golf course or in important business meetings. On the occasion of major sporting events they can be found in sports bars or in each other's homes. "There was a rowdy panoply gathered around the TV screen".

A panoply is actually a sticky french pastry filled with deliciously gooey custard, you know, the kind that as soon as you take a bite, custard oooozes out and dribbles all the way to the bottom of your chin. Bliss!
Fortunately, we have a real French pastry chef in our town who makes panoplies just like that. His French wife would not appreciate me referring to them as panoplies, however. Mind you, if I used my best French accent I might be able to pull it off. However, unfortunately, my vehicle is getting new tyres fitted and walking to the aforementioned patisserie would take at least 45 minutes. I need the exercise, but I would undo it by eating the panoply and then have to walk 45 minutes home again! And how's the next best seller ever going to get written if I do that? Ps: this is not an entry in the competition.
Panoply (a play off of "Monopoly") was a game invented by the bread industry that never took off. Apparently, no one covets owning bakeries and cafes as much as they do railroads and utility companies.

Panoply is a group of women getting together every Saturday night. They have a 12-step program to deal with the hard-headed men in their lives. Pots and pans do not do the trick. Pano-"pleas" do not do work, either. They support each other and try to find ways to get through the hard, thick skulls of their husbands.
