Threnody
Threnody is actually a funeral lament - which Shari described very poetically in her guess at the word's meaning. Well done, Shari. However, three other entries were put on the poll and voters chose Kimono Hime's wonderful suggestion about the crazy loose woven threads on the back of a tapestry. I'm sure the new meaning for this word will be used in her studio often.

how do we know which entry wins...
Threnody is very difficult to achieve...in fact only once in my my life have I successfully performed threnody. Threnody is the act (or is that art?!) of successfully opening a product packaged in cardboard which requires you to "tear along the dotted line". For me this is usually a box of laundry detergent, which requires a mere 3 sides of the box to be opened by removing a strip of the cardboard and managing to somehow remove this entirely and completely without having to go back for a second or even third attempt. Sorry to rave on, but threnody is one of the banes of my life. As I said, I was once, and only once, a successful threnodopist. It was such an unusual experience I remember everything about that day. The exact brand of laundry detergent, the clothes I was laundering.....I will shut up now and let someone else have a turn.
In answer to anonymous, above, I've just added a poll at the top right for people to vote. I've chosen my top 3 for maunder. People can vote for the one they prefer. I'll change the vote to threnody when I add the next word for the day. Clear as mud?
Threnody is that impossible-to-get-out knot in thread that magically appears when stitching something, usually when you have an inch or so left in what you're doing, meaning you struggle to get it out for hours, sometimes days, until you finally give up, cut the thread and start over.
Threnody is something tragic but at the same time very comic. So u don’t know if u laugh at the comical part or feel sad for the tragedy. Like the kid who came to our ER the other day with a dog bite and lots of scratches, when he tried to set up a fight between a dog and cat and both of them decided to get him instead. talk about threnody!!
A threnody is a song sung by three mermaids
Threnody is a mood set by birdsong, especially in the early morning: "The hedge rang with a threnody of robins, wrens and thrushes as the sun peeked over the treetops."
A threnody is a song that requires three diffrent vocal ranges.
Thenody is when you sit down to do a bit of sewing, and the chair is comfortable and the room is warm and your eyes get heavier and heavie... what? No, of course I wasn't alseep.
Threnody is the look of reproof and disappointment on someone's face when you have let them down. When I forgot to file the annual reports on time, my boss said she understood, but her threnody was unmistakable.
Threnody is a type of slow, almost purposeless walk, relaxing and meandering. However, when I tried to fit it into a sentence, I couldn't, so I may be mistaken...
Threnody is the name for that semi-conscious state between being awake and falling asleep. It is often characterised by the sensation of falling out of bed, even when you're not.
Threnody sounds like a melancholic melody; a song sung by a combination of broken-hearted, grieving, and moaning that is carried in the wind. It’s a very sad sound.
It is a rare abnormal growth on the brain that runs in some families. People who have this growth are able to simuataneously understand 3 or more languages spoken at once.
When pixies go bad its called threnody (derived from Noddy -Enid Blyton)
Threnody is actually a term that came to be after a third member of the Kennedy clan was killed in unfortunate circumstances.
It's the crazy loose woven threads on the back of a tapestry. I see this all the time with some of the stuff in my studio. All looks well on the front, but flip it over and... threnody! chaos! anarchy!
Threnody is a small town on the northern coast of the Upper Penninsula of Michigan, US. Pronounced by locals as "Three-No-Dee" with the emphasis on "no," the town is locally famous for its resistence to the building of a casino by the Chippewas. Said Lars Skoglund, the mayor, "There's no room here for more games of chance. We got all the betting we can handle with the guessing of the numbers on the unemployment checks and the lotto, yah."
The highest note that an angel sings.
I'm going to post photographic evidence on my blog...
