Scopula

Scopula are the tufts of hair on bees' legs. Can't say I've ever observed a bee that closely, but next time I'll be keeping an eye out for the scopula - as well as the stingula! Dogmum pointed out that I might have been meaning scapula, which is a flash name for your shoulder blade. Thanks for the heads up, Dogmum. But no, I always intended to use scopula. Our winner today is Soph, who went all intergalactic on us with her meaning. Well done, Soph.

Here's her effort: 'Scopula' is the name of a lunar eclipse seen from Jupiter.

A scopula is the fancy name for a garden stake, used to tie up peas, beans, tomatoes & other vegetables that grow quite tall.

A scopula is used by ambulance personnel/paramedics, to support and stabilise patients with suspected spinal injuries.

Hi Word Imperfect - it's actually scapula. You must have one of those editions of the dictionary where there were several printing errors. Hang on to it - it could be worth a fortune one day!

Hi Dogmum
I will hang on to my dictionary. I need a fortune! This version has scapula and scopula - with two different meanings. That's a bonus.
