Jemadar

A jemadar is a few different things, mostly Indian. The easiest one to describe here is an Indian police officer. Thanks for continuing to bless me with your invented meanings. I appreciate your interesting perspectives on life.

Tesori Trovati was today's winner with her delightful meaning: Jemadar - the sixth sense that I have when I find a beautiful gemstone at an incredible price!

It is a piece of furniture found in posh houses -- a bit like a humidor, but for keeping jewels in.

Not a definition, but a site that might be of interest to Word Imps everywhere: Oxford English Dictionary's Adopt an Obscure Word Scheme.

Jemadar is the word used to describe a sense of achievement. e.g. when my wife left home for work this morning, I had a list of chores, compiled by us both, to have hopefully achieved during the day. By the end of the day I had done all but 2 tasks. Despite not having a 100% completion rate, I still had a sense of jemadar, which led to a feeling of satisfaction.
