Elecampane

Elecampane is less beautiful than it sounds to me. It's a plant with bitter aromatic leaves.

I loved the word picture created by LivelyClamor. Here's the winning meaning: Elecampagne is a canopy with lots of little bells sewn onto it which ring at the slightest breeze.

An elecampagne is the technical term for the loops on watches that the watch-strap threads through. Such an elegant sounding word for such a small thing!(but a very important thing, nothing more annoying than having your watch strap flapping in the breeze!).

Elecampane describes the numb feeling one gets the day after a big election. This is especially found in people who didn't see anything or anyone they voted for make it through.

It's actually a plant which has been used by herbalists as medicine for coughs, bronchial infections, asthma and some skin conditions. Before modern medicines it was also sometimes used to ease tuberculosis.
(Standard disclaimer here: I'm not a doctor nor a professional herbalist)
