Clunch

I knew clunch would draw in the word imps. Its real meaning, however, is less than fascinating. Clunch is soft limestone used in carving. My dictionary says it's white and the carving work is internal which might mean indoors. Not sure about that. A carver out there might be able to throw some light on it. Your invented meanings for clunch, however, were fabulous. Exemplary. I loved them all. And well done to Thesaurus Rex who had a runaway win on the poll. Well deserved.

A clunch is a clutch of eggs laid by a chicken with inadequate grit in its diet. The eggs are therefore laid without shells and being pretty useless are often fed to the other farm animals...maybe for lunch?

A clunch is actually the original term used to describe a bunch.

It was so named After Mr Gerald Clunch, who was the first exporter of Bananas from the Canary Islands in the mid 1800's.

Upon trying to sell them in the UK, he coined the collective term for a number of Bananas as a clunch. The only problem being the market traders who came to sell them found the term both ridiculous and difficult to shout quickly in a busy market place, and started using the term bunch as it sounded better with bananas, and thus the term clunch went out of common use.

The sound made when you change gears and don't dip the clutch enough. Guaranteed to make everyone in the vicinity turn and stare and wonder how on earth you got your licence in the first place.

When I first saw the word, I thought of clutch purses, clunch being a very small purse.

Really cute blog.
