A cyclotron is used in science experiments to accelerate charged particles by a strong vertical magnetic field. That's my version of what the dictionary said, so if you're a scientist who disagrees, many apologies for the layman's terminology.
Thanks to the word imps for their imaginative meanings. I enjoyed them all because they are much easier to understand than the one in my dictionary!
PianoMan takes today's cake with his visually stimulating meaning for cyclotron. Here 'tis: A cyclotron is the technical name for an automaton cyclops gone haywire. For some reason, many of them gained personalities and terrorized entire continents. Such examples may be Godzilla, Sasquatch, or Big Bird. However some are nice - like the B.F.G. (Big Friendly Giant) or Elmo.

A Cyclotron is the latest innovation for your utility room and is a rejuvination machine for your worn out clothes. It includes a microprocessor which decides what best to do with each discarded item of clothing. Typical results include an old pair of underpants fromwhich the machine produced a glamourous evening dress and a holey pair of socks were transformed into a rather snazzy woollen hat.
I love both of these meanings but I will wait one more day in case we have another contestant in the wings. At the moment I can't decide between the meanings suggested by Thinks and Piano Man. I am deliberating as we speak. Such great minds are at work it is hard to separate them.
A cyclotron was a thrill ride at an amusement park back in the old days before they actually really had thrilling rides. It was basically a merry-go-round, or carousel, where people sat on bicycles and went round and round, and up and down. Not very exciting by our standards, but back in its day was well worth the 1 cent it cost to go for a spin on the cyclotron.
Cyclotrons are seen on the sideline at rugby games. They are used by the reserve players to warm-up while they are waiting to get on to the field. They are really just a common garden variety exercylce, but are labelled as cyclotrons so the rugby players don't feel silly being seen on national television sitting on a stationary bicycle.
