Swarf

In reality, swarf describes a group of pilings or chips of wood or metal. The kind of stuff that I usually call sawdust, perhaps. Your invented meanings were many and varied and I enjoyed them all. Congratulations to Winiata for his excellent invented meaning. I agree with the pollsters.

Swarf is the term that describes the disturbing looking foamy scum that floats around the coastline and docklands where the sea joins the land.

It is especially prevelent where the waves break onto the shore... I havent got a clue why it would be called this.. or even a funny name for someone involved with its discovery... but there you go....Swarf.

A swarf is an expression used when when you try to swat a BIG blowfly and you miss time and time and again so you let someone else try and they get it first time, you say "What a swarf!"

when someone vomits in a swimming pool, the barf floating on the pool's surface is called swarf. the perpetrator is called a swarfer.

e.g.: "the hotel was filthy. there were cockroaches in the bedrooms and, even worse, there was swarf in the pool!"

e.g.: a group of sicilian tourists had got into the habit of taking drunken swims in the american hotel they were staying at. often, by the time they got out of the pool, there would be little islands of swarf of different colours and consistencies floating on its surface.while overseeing the cleaning of the pool one night, the american general manager of the hotel once famously growled, "bloody sicilian swarfers!"

A swarf is a scarf which is worn when the weather does not merit the wearing of a scarf (forgive me, I am a Canadian), usually for purely fasion-related reasons.

"We had a lovely summer here in Calgary, but I still managed to wear my silk swarf."

Swarf is the leftovers that you find on the table the morning after you had them for dinner. It could be little scraps of food that you didn't like, which could be some vegetables of something.

e.g. we came home last night and the house was in a mess. the dishes weren't done, the washing hadn't been done, and there was swarf on the table!(which had been from the previous night). Dad was in BIG trouble!
