Tumulus

A tumulus, oddly enough, is a mound of earth or stones placed over an ancient grave. Some of you happened upon the graveyard connection in your meanings. Spooky. This word has to rate up there with panoply as one of my favourite words so far in this game. And thanks to new player, 3 Elements, for the winning entry which described the Nissan Tumulus as the newest midsized SUV. Great name for a car.

A tumulus is a mythical creature - a cross between a belligerent two horned rhino and an angry elephant - it has 2 horns on a crenellated snout, it is squat about as tall as it is broad , it has bellicose red eyes and a long horn with which it swipes viciously at enemies , it also has a pair of wicked tusks with corrugated edges and bellows like twenty angry bull elephants - in short a tumultuous package , hence the name tumulus!!

Tumulus is another term for "growth spurt." An example would be, "I am going to have to buy my daughter new jeans. Over the summer, she tumulusly grew three inches, and the hems of her pants are hanging above her ankles."

Tumulus.. the wind that blows across winter beaches, whipping up the sand and small pebbles.. driving in across the sea. Heavy wind full of rain and mist.

A tumulus situation is one in which you can see impending disaster but can't do anything to stop it: "The stack of dishes teeterd tumulusly as Peter put out his hand to steady them, but his effort was in vain. The dishes crashed to the floor anyway."

Tumulus is one of those creatures from Greek mythology -- neither God nor human; he travels constantly, leaves discord and disruption in his wake

The bloated, sick feeling one gets after pigging out on junk food. Alfred went ahead and ate both large pizzas with extra peppers and anchovies, even though he knew he'd feel tumulus as a result.

Tumulus is a meteological term for a type of cloud (not to be confused with Cumulus). Tumulus clouds are ones that look like something else e.g. a horse, a map of Papua New Guinea or the face of your old maths teacher.

Tumulus is an adjective for the goose-down winter coats that people wear that make them look like the Say-Puft Marshmallow Man. If your coat is so puffy your arms hand at 45 degree angles from your body, the coat is tumulus.

Tumulus is the kind of move I did last night at the Gym when my personal trainer was trying to show me how to do some ab crunches on the Swiss Ball. This move is more commonly attempted by professional circus performers with many years of experience, and believe me they look alot more elegant that I did when they do it.

Tumulus, pronounced too-moo-loos, were going to be characters in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by Roald Dahl. The name was changed to the Oompah Loompahs. A letter was found written by Roald to his friend Gerald, saying he was doing this, but he didn't give any reason why.
